Jesus was crucified on Friday along with two criminals. The Roman soldiers nailed his hands to the crossbeam and his feet to the post. During this terrible ordeal, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” The soldiers also nailed a sign over Jesus’ head which said, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” The Roman governor, Pilate, had written this despite the objections of the chief priests. Then, the soldiers divided his clothing and cast lots.

He taught boldly in the temple and declared that he had been sent by the Father. Jewish people from all over the world heard Jesus speak. They had come to Jerusalem for the joyous, autumn feast. But he would not allow it. Then Jesus sent the disciples back to Bethsaida, across the Sea of Galilee. Thus he left them and went into the hills alone. The disciples rowed late into the night against the wind. During this crossing, the scriptures tell the story of Jesus walking on the sea. In the gospel story, Jesus says, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” And then, Peter tries to walk on water.
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: start;">Discussion Questions
<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">How do you think the disciples felt as they rowed back to Bethsaida? We all know that a child might ask for something that would not be good for them. If earthly fathers know how to give wisely to their children, we can be sure that God will give us what we truly need and more. Our heavenly Father gives us everything we need to grow spiritually. Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.”

Discussion Questions

We can talk to God about the things we want or need. What are some things that people pray for? We should remember, however, to trust God’s will. What does that mean? Jesus said we should “pray always and not become discouraged.”

He taught them to pray often and trust in God. He also taught them to seek God’s will in everything that they prayed for. One day, a disciple said to Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray,” like John the Baptist taught his disciples. So, Jesus gave them a model prayer that became known as the Lord’s Prayer. Part of the prayer says, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
