Week 2 of Year 1 "The Poor in Spirit"

❖❖❖❖
The Poor in Spirit

Students may read Matthew 5:1-12

The disciples followed Jesus up a high hill one very special day. When they arrived at their destination, Jesus spoke to them about faith. He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Those who are poor in spirit know that they need God. They are humble, and they want to learn from God. We also see this written as, “Happy are the poor in spirit.” This teaching is the first of eight Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount.

Discussion Questions

Sometimes we go about our lives as if we had no need of God. Why do we forget to depend on God? What are some experiences that cause us to remember that we need God every day? We can trust God and depend on God.
