Refocus Your Energy

Arrest the energy you previously used in self-seeking behavior and channel it into the work at hand, the other person, or healthy play. Right now, you probably feel most comfortable in one of these three arenas of life. Try venturing into the arena that is least familiar to you. A well-rounded person can enjoy and appreciate their work, some type of play, and a variety of relationships. At every transition during the day, choose the path of life rather than the dead end of temptation. Focus your energy into constructive work, renewing play, and healthy relationships rather than squandering your energy on fighting a losing battle with temptation.

Even when overeating temptations are the greatest, there are ways to redirect your energy. Do you overeat at parties? If you do, turn your attention to the possibilities for play, relationships, and even work at the party. Choose the active option by playing the game or help with the refreshments. Enjoy the conversation and humor. Rather than circling the food table, sit in one spot with a beverage and get to know someone a little better. If you leave a chair open next to you, someone who needs your companionship might sit down next to you. If you don’t feel like talking, do some people-watching. Admire their good qualities and give thanks for them.

Life is bursting with possibilities for participation in truth and beauty, as well as goodness. Join in the pursuits of truth, the creations of beauty, and the expressions of goodness. These divine realities can permeate even the commonplace duties of the day. Being mindful of these higher goals can add a meaningful dimension to all we do.

Ordinary activities can be further uplifted when love is your motive. Through love, your work is elevated to a new level—the level of devoted service. Through love, we desire to do good for others.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;

teach me your paths.

Psalm 25:4
