Forbid Him Not
Students may read Mark 9:38-41
One day, the apostle John came to Jesus with what he believed was disturbing news. He said that an unknown man was teaching and casting out devils in Jesus’ name. John forbade him to do it. When Jesus heard about this he said, “Forbid him not.” Jesus explained to John that people who claim to do great works in his name will not likely speak against him. He said, “He who is not against us is for us.” Jesus was aware that his teachings would spread in ways such as this.
Discussion Questions
Why was John disturbed by this stranger? Jesus knew his disciples would need to be tolerant of others in the years to come. Jesus also mentioned a cup of water. How is the gospel message like a cup of refreshing water for our souls?
