A Village Refuses
Students may read Luke 9:51-56
Jesus and the disciples came near a Samaritan village and tried to obtain overnight lodging. But the people refused to let them stay because they were on their way to Jerusalem. This angered James and John who asked Jesus if they could “bid fire come down from heaven” upon the Samaritan village. When Jesus heard those words of vengeance, “He turned and rebuked them.” After Jesus said a few more things to James and John, they all went on to another village.
Discussion Questions
James and John wanted to retaliate against the Samaritan villagers. Can you explain what that means? Why did Jesus disapprove? When we are tempted to retaliate against someone, what would Jesus want us to do instead?
